Does the Holy Spirit Come Upon a Person or Does He Live in a Person?

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24: 49, KJV)

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” (John 20: 22, KJV)

These scriptures as shown and many others can be very confusing for a lot of genuine students of The Word. It is very needful for us to understand that scripture does not contradict itself and is always self-explanatory. The two writers, whom many have misinterpreted in light of this question, describe different phenomena but of the same spirit. Apostle John describes the inward residence or indwelling of The Spirit and Apostle Luke also describes the “uponness” of The Spirit or the coming upon of The Spirit on a person. According to these scriptures, we realize that the Holy Spirit could live in a person and could also come upon a person.

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. But he spake of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.” (John 2: 19, 21- 22, KJV)

We see here from this scripture that after Jesus resurrected, he had raised a new temple. The body which He came with from resurrection was a new temple. The Bible again tells us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. This lends credence to the fact that the Holy   Spirit is resident in us. We therefore see that after Jesus’ resurrection, when he breathed on his disciples, they received the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. The indwelling of the Holy Ghost refers to the Holy Ghost coming to live in us and bearing witness with us that we are of God or sons of God. However that is not all.

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1: 8, KJV)

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24: 49, KJV)

To be endued means to sink into a garment. The Holy Spirit comes upon a person and the person sinks into a garment from on high. From on high means from the highest point of the person. To be clothed from on high means that every part of the person is clothed, from the very top to the bottom. The word upon is the Greek word “epi”. “Epi” does not relate to coming from heaven necessarily. It means above your highest point. Thus the scripture means you shall be endued with power from your highest point. “Epi” again means to have charge of. Thus the scripture could also be interpreted as you shall receive power when the Holy Ghost comes to have charge of you. In that instance, the Holy Spirit has charge over you and not the opposite. Again, “epi” means throughout as much as. Thus when the Holy Spirit comes upon you he takes charge of you as much as you; he has as much of you. He is going to come as much as you and be throughout you. “Epi” further means as long as touching. Some people have the Holy Ghost but He has not gone as far as to touch them. Thus when the Holy Ghost comes upon you, you have a feel of that which is resident on the inside.

The Holy Ghost as a garment is there for every believer to sink into and wrap himself with. This is the Holy Spirit coming upon you. “Epi” again means above or superimposed over. Thus the Holy Spirit is in you but in the “uponness” of the spirit, he comes above you. Comes also means influence. So you may have the influence in you but the “uponness” of The Spirit makes the Holy Spirit have as much influence as you have.

When you get born again, you receive the indwelling of the Spirit but you also need to experience the “uponness” of The Spirit where the Holy Spirit’s influence is as much as you, above you, throughout you and as much as touching you. Hallelujah! Shalom!!!

God bless you for this article, but my question is Does the uponess of the Spirit occur at a particular time? Does The spirit come and go? Does one have to do something to receive the uponess?

I want to ask: Is masturbation sinful, is it true that it’s demonic?. And how does one stop after becoming addicted?
